Noisy pickup ? Dowan to change it? Want to maintain the sound and vintage value without the HUM and Noise?? Do Potting !!

I use a cocktail of Bee's Wax , Parraifin Wax and A dash of Liquid Break for this work.. Bee's wax makes the wax easier to clean up.

Single coild pickups always have that nice "twang" sound to it that Humbucker's can never simulate ( even with coil spilt) , Only problem is... Its way too noisy at times... There are a few things we can do to reduce the noise.. The most effective one to reduce microphonic noises.. Is Potting!! Note that most USA made pickups have been potted... But after years of usage , a repotting might be needed.

Removing the Pickup ( this is a noisy jazzmaster pickup) and removing the plastic casing.
I "double Boil" the wax to maintain a maximum of 100 degree's temp , this makes sure the wax is always in liquid form , but not hot enough to melt any component. It also makes sure that the wax slowly wraps the winding nicely
Hold your breath you noisy thing!!

The left side is potted , right is not. time for you my noisy little thing

After done , i instantly fit in the plastic  covers so that the wax forms a hard bond and leaving no air space inside for microphonic action. I clean the edges and the cover up with a dry sugar cloth.

You can tell the difference.. but you surely can hear once you kick the "drive" switch !! It wont make your Single coil hum'less like a bucker... But it'll do the trick. !!
